Update on banned books:
As of May 16, 2024, LGISD has banned 4 books from its school libraries. The reasons given for
the objections are multiple instances of profanity (particularly the “f” word) or references to sex
or rape that the complainant felt were too descriptive. The list of banned books (labeled
“removed”) and the books pending review can be found on this webpage:
Update on the book buying process: As of April 2024, the LGISD librarians are limited to
submitting one list per month of no more than 75 books total for both district libraries until further
notice. The concern raised was that the school board members do not have enough time in the
30 day review period to vet all of the books on the list properly. However, this limits the number
of books the libraries can purchase.
Clarification on the Two book processes:
Book purchasing: Lists must be submitted to the board, posted online and reviewed by board
and community for 30 days. Then two or more board members can identify any books on the list
to be voted on by the board as to whether or not they can be purchased. All books not identified
can be purchased.
Removing books already in the library: There is an infographic on the website on this page:

If a parent, employee, or community member wants a book removed from an LGISD library, they
fill out a form and the book goes to a committee for review. After the committee’s decision, the
complainant can appeal the decision using the district’s grievance policy. This means the book
can go through three more levels of review: 1.) the superintendent’s designee, 2.) the
superintendent, and 3.) the school board. (Note: once a form is filled out on a book, the book is
removed from circulation until a decision has been reached.)
